Rainbows are a wonderful theme for young children: they’re bright, cheerful and full of easy learning — colors, order, patterns and counting. Here are seven simple ideas that need little or no preparation.
1. Rainbow color hunt
Find something red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple around the house or on a walk. Our printable Rainbow Color Hunt checklist makes it a game.
2. Rainbow snack plate
Arrange fruit and vegetables in rainbow order on a plate. It’s a gentle way to explore new foods — with the usual grown-up supervision for age-appropriate sizes.
3. Toy sorting by color
Pull out a basket of blocks or toys and sort them into rainbow piles. For toddlers, start with just two colors.
4. Paper plate rainbow bridge
A half paper plate becomes a rainbow bridge for toy animals to cross. See the step-by-step craft.
5. Draw a rainbow trail
Ask, “If you found a magical rainbow trail, where would it lead?” and let your child draw the answer. Try our drawing prompt.
6. Make a real rainbow
On a sunny day, hold a glass of water near a window or use a garden hose mist (with supervision) to make a small rainbow appear. Watch your child’s face!
7. Rainbow movement game
Call out a color and an action: “Red — jump! Blue — tiptoe! Green — hop like Bunny!” A great way to burn off energy indoors.
